Mare de Deu del Mont

Mare de Deu del Mont

Mare de Deu del Mont is a magnificent mountain that stands above the rest. It is one of the hardest climbs the pros do from Girona and is the featured climb of this weekend challenge.

RIDE 1 – Mare de Deu 120km, 1750m

This is a Queen stage, a ride that stays mostly on back roads and through the countryside region of Pla de l’Estany. The ride takes us to la Mare de Deu del Mont. a magnificent mountain that stands above the rest. We’ll go around its base with steep and short ups and downs. Expect a 14 km climb that peaks around 12%, and enjoy the rewarding magnificent views of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. After the descent, we’ll stop in beautiful medieval Besalú for coffee/lunch before heading back to Girona.

RIDE 2 – Els Àngels i Santa Pellaia 73km, 910m

This stage is an extended version of the usual recovery ride for the pros. The climb to els Angels comes quick after leaving Girona. This is the local’s favorite climb and Lance Armstrong held the record for many years. The steeper side – downhill now to Madremanya is also another place where we see the pros doing intervals very often.
We will ride to Púbol, known for the Gala – Salvador Dalí Castle. Another, even narrower, road will lead us to Monells. Our coffee break. From there, we will face the easy side of Santa Pellaia (known as the Hincapie climb) a 6km mild gradual climb. The km’s are perfectly marked along the climb with 500, 400, 300, 200, 100, 50m to go! Most of the time a good sprint is waiting at the top.
