Girona Sample Ride and Day

Costa Brava: Sant Grau

The goal for today is the Sant Grau climb. We will ride to Llagostera to take the St Grau climb road. A 9km climb with a few ups and downs. It is tricky at the end, but watch out for the km posts. The first kilometer going down is a steep (14%) to the chapel of Sant Grau and then 5 km more of winding descent with amazing views to the sea. The road surface has been repaved, but there is some loose gravel. Call it out.

We will take the roller coaster going north along the coast to Sant Feliu and S’Agaró. On the way back we will climb once more, halfway to Romanyà, before lunch in Llagostera and heading up to Girona.

Sant Grau sample ride profile

Its nature, climate and history create a setting of beauty that never fails to seduce, with its lush vegetation propped against the blue and green immensity of the sea. The 61ºF average annual temperature, moderate rainfall, and the 2,500 hours of sunshine that illuminate the historic vestiges, are only the visible aspects of a reality that has a hidden pulse waiting to be discovered. Its 133 miles of coastline stretch between Blanes in the south, surrounded by El Maresme and El Montseny, and Portbou to the north, on the French border. Beaches, coves, cliffs and woods sit among renowned places like S’Agaró, Tossa de Mar, Begur, Cadaques and Portlligat. The modern tourist infrastructure of the area has turned Costa Brava into one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations.

The most striking image you have of Llagostera is from afar, it is a town rising above a plain built on a hill with the majestic Saint Feliu Church towering above. In between Girona and the coast, it offers the tranquility of the countryside and nearby protected nature areas and the excitement of the local mushroom and medieval fairs. Walk in its old quarters to enjoy from up close the Saint Feliu church, medieval ruins of the three remaining towers of the feudal castle, and parts of the old city wall.

We will climb to this Chapel built for the patron saint of cattle. High inland from Tossa, it has rewarding views from the top and a grueling curvy road down to the coast.
